LA Phase I results

These test results from the August 1998 Phase I field trial in the San Gabriel Valley of southern California show that Phase I selective routing of wireless E911 calls based on the antenna location is not effective at reducing the large number of calls received by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) comm centers. The centers currently handle over 3 million wireless 911 calls per year, and officials want to reduce the calls by several means, including public education and selective routing.

In this case, 71% of all calls from wireless E911 callers were still routed to the CHP. Of those calls that were routed to local agencies, 35% were transferred to the CHP, while the CHP transferred about 15% of the calls they received. Net CHP handling percentage--about 70%.
