The Most Famous Plate?

This could well be the most famous license plate in history? If you don't recognize it right off, think back to the 1970s and the television show "Adam-12," developed by Jack Webb, and starring Martin Milner (Off. Pete Malloy, badge #744) and Kent McCord (Off. Jim Reed, badge #2430).

If you recall, at the beginning of the show, a dispatcher was talking during the opening theme music, giving 1A12 and other units information, including the results of a warrant check on this plate--"1A12, no warrants. Lincoln, X-ray, Ida, four-eight-three." We especially liked the broadcast of "415 fight....with chains and knives."

The voice? It was Shaaron Claridge, an LAPD dispatcher who retired about 1985.

The theme music was composed in 1968 by Frank G. Comstock. Would you believe that Comstock also composed the music for the "Rocky and His Friends" cartoon show, and "The Phil Silvers" show?

In Dec. 2005 NBC-TV began offering the first season of Adam-12 on Apple Computer's iTunes Music Store. You can buy and download the entire season for $36.99, or individual episodes for $1.99 each.
