Job Openings

The nation's public safety communications centers have been facing a staffing shortage for the last 10 years, the result of an overall increase in staffing, competition with the private sector offering similar jobs for more money, and a large turn-over rate of existing employees.

As a result, almost every comm center in America is looking for qualified candidates, without experience, whom they will train to perform the necessary tasks. Of course, having some prior public contact or public safety experience is always a benefit. But most agencies consider the dispatcher position as entry-level, requiring only a high school education and a clean background.

We've collected these job listings directly from agencies and other sources, and include contact information on applying. We have divided the listing into an active list, and then several geographic inactive lists that you can use for reference when researching job requirements.

For much more information on applying and hiring, see our complete list of job resources.

Ad Postings

We post these job ads at no cost, so send a complete job description and application guidelines to us via e-mail. Feel free to use full words instead of abbreviations. Since most of our visitors are familiar with the standard requirements and qualifications, feel free to include just your agency's specific requirements.

Always include specific job application information, either telephone number, e-mail address or Web page. Provide any expiration date for the job offer, or dates of interviews, etc. And if you have more extensive information or a formal job description, provide it in Acrobat (pdf) format, and we'll post that on our Web site with a link.

We also provide classified job listings in our printed edition for a fee, but you must consider the job closing date and our publication dates. Generally, our publication is best for job openings that are continuously open.

Pay Index

We've calculated a national Pay Index from the highest pay rates for line dispatchers--not supervisors, managers or other specialized positions. The Index is influenced by the number of listings we've received, the agencies' geographic location and many economic factors. Therefore, it best represents the average for larger agencies, and those on the west coast.

$3,864 per month

Highest We've Ever Seen: $6,792 per month, Sunnyvale (N. Calif.) DPS

Lowest We've Ever Seen: $892 per month, Fannin County (Geo.)

Historically, the Index hovered very narrowly between $2,850 and $2,950 until about mid-2000, when it began rising steadily to $3,100. It has moved upward ever since.

Current Job Listings

Some of these openings are continuous, while others require that you apply before a specific deadline. Even if a listing has expired, agencies frequently open them up again within 4-6 months. Check with the agency to find out if an expired might open again. The top listing is the most recently posted information, on the date shown at the end of the listing.

Older and expired listings can be viewed in a separate file by region of the country.
