Job Openings

The nation's public safety communications centers have been facing a staffing shortage for the last 10 years, the result of an overall increase in staffing, competition with the private sector offering similar jobs for more money, and a large turn-over rate of existing employees.

As a result, almost every comm center in America is looking for qualified candidates, without experience, whom they will train to perform the necessary tasks. Of course, having some prior public contact or public safety experience is always a benefit. But most agencies consider the dispatcher position as entry-level, requiring only a high school education and a clean background.

We've collected these job listings directly from agencies and other sources, and include contact information on applying. We have divided the listing into an active list, and then several geographic inactive lists that you can use for reference when researching job requirements.

Find much more information about applying and the hiring procedures on our job resources Web page.

Pay Index

We've calculated a national Pay Index from the highest pay rates for line dispatchers--not supervisors, managers or other specialized positions. The Index is influenced by the number of listings we received, the agencies' geographic location and many economic factors.

$3,878 per month

Highest We've Ever Seen: $7,031 per month, Sunnyvale (N. Calif.) DPS

Lowest We've Ever Seen: $892 per month, Fannin County (Geo.)

Historically, the Index hovered very narrowly between $2,850 and $2,950 until about mid-2000, when it began rising steadily to $3,100. It has moved upward ever since, and changes only slightly every 3-4 months.

Current Job Listings

Some of these job openings have an application deadline--check with the agency before you apply. However, even if a listing has already expired, agencies will frequently open them up within 4-6 months. Check back with the agency to find out if a job listing here is once again open.

The listing at the top was posted most recently (date shown at the end of the listing). Older and expired listings have been moved to another page, separated by region of the country.
