Most work is verbal..dispatchers must receive, evaluate and produce verbal information.
Random and reactive...dispatchers do not choose calls/situations to be handled; they do not know ahead of time what the situation will be.
Must be able to multi-task. Dispatchers are required to perform multiple activities simultaneously and work with frequent interruption.
Dispatchers are required to interact with many different people on a daily basis, often at the same time.
The work structure is rigid. They must work within a framework of many rules, procedures and regulations.
They have a high visibility for their actions and decisions--performance is taped.
They have a high level of responsibility and there will be serious consequences if an error is made.
Must deal with unpleasant situations.
Work is often repetitive and alternates between periods of high activity and low activity.
They have access to sensitive information.
Dispatcher must, with little time to spare, provide information, make decisions and perform duties that may be critical to safety of the public and field officers.
They are often the only contact citizens have with the Police Department. They are in a public relations role. They dispatcher's demeanor and competence in handling calls from the public combine to form what is often the first impression that people have about law enforcement agencies.
