Map training

Postby Lifeguard911 on Tue Jun 23, 2009 9:44 am

I am in charge of maps in our dispatch center. I have noticed that some of the dispatchers here have little or no interest in learning maps and how they apply to 911. When I try to explain Latitude and Longitude to them, I can almost see their eyes glaze over because they either don't want to understand it or can't.
To me, knowing about Lat/Long and how to use it and how to read a map is an essential skill for any 911 Dispatcher. I have searched all over the internet, including here and APCO's site for map training resources and am having no luck. Lots of stuff for elementary kids, though.
I am going to distribute a questionaire to all of our dispatchers to find out about where they think they are weakest on their map skills and what they would like instruction on the most. I also want to get them familiar with GPS because it's use is so widespread now.
My question is this- Does anyone here know a good link for map skills training information? Thanks in advance for your help.
