| Convicted Dispatcher Receives Probation |
| Wednesday, March 12 2008 | |||||||
A Detroit (Mich.) dispatcher who was convicted earlier this year for criminal neglect of duty has been sentenced to one year's probation and 100 hours of community service. Sharon Nichols, 44, will serve no jail time for her mis-handling of a 911 call from a 5 year-old boy back in 2006. The boy reported that his mother was unconscious, but Nichols and another calltaker mistook the calls for pranks. In fact, the mother was suffering a serious medical problem and died. The other dispatcher, Terri Sutton, 48, dispatched an officer to scold the boy, and charges were dismissed against her in February. Both dispatchers were suspended without pay for five days, and were assigned to administrative duties. Nichols was fired after her conviction. Read more about the sentencing here.

| When in doubt, send 'em out.....that is what i live by and I have never gotten in any trouble. Kids playing with 911 is the norm in this business. It's not my responsibility to scold or try to scare these kids, an officer can speak with these kids, just get an officer on the way and save yourself these kinds of headaches. |

| What a sad sad story. I've been following this case and this dispatcher made a poor judgement that this young child will have to pay for the rest of his life. I'm disappointed that the dispatcher only got probation. |

Well technically they did dispatch a unit...but only to scold the boy. I guess they never heard the saying... "When in doubt...send them out" |
