Caller Kills 2 Despite Dispatcher's Warning
Saturday, November 17 2007
A Pasadena (Tex.) man shot and killed two burglars who had taken property from his neighbor's home, despite warnings from a dispatcher during a 911 call that, "I know what you're feeling, but it's not worth shooting someone over this." The man's 911 call lasted 6 minutes, officials said, and he apparently became frustrated with the police response as the suspects began to leave the house. "I'm gonna shoot. I'm gonna shoot," the man told the dispatcher, who continued to urge him to stay inside, take no action and wait for the police. But the man armed himself with a 12-gauge shotgun, confronted the suspects and shot them both. "Get the law over here quick. I had no choice. They came in the front yard with me." Texas allows citizens to use deadly force in some situations when their own property is jeopardized, but it's unclear if the law applies to a neighbor's property. Listen or download (mp3) to the man's extraordinary 911 call, and then his post-shooting call here.

How do you justify killing someone over material things. He was told several times not to go outside and not to shoot anyone and he did it anyway. He was protecting his neighbors things by being on the phone with the police giving as much information as he could. Once he stepped outside with that gun he changed took the law into his own hands and became judge, jury and executioner. This is not right. He took 2 lives over things that no one can take with them when they die, the theives or the owners.

Mr. H has my vote for Governor of Tex.!

That should be the 11th commandment to protect thy neighbor?s and his/her home. I only fought Mr. H for not putting one into them when they broke the threshold of the home leaving the criminals dead corps lying inside the home.

I believe that this dispatcher handled himself in a very professional manner. He remained in a calm state and advised the subject on numerous occasions to remain inside his residence and not to take action himself. A dispatching position is not as easy as what the average person may believe. The agency that he is employed by should be honored to have an employee that can handle an emergency as he did. Good job!
