A Visit to Haleyville
In December 2001 Robert Gallagher went back Haleyville, where he helped place the nation's first 911 call in 1968. Since he arrived on Christmas eve, he relied upon the kindness of the City Hall custodian to let him in the building to take some photos of the The Red Telephone that was used for that first call. He also viewed the proclamation that was issued in 1993 honoring Robert Fitzgerald, his colleague who designed the first 911 system and assisted with its installation. Also on display is a proclamation from then-governor Guy Hunt declaring Feb. 16, 1968 as "Emergency Personnel Day" in the state.
Gallagher reports that the 911 museum operated by the town of Haleyville was damaged in a 1999 fire, and now the 911-related materials are temporarily on display in City Hall.
