Commendation for First 911 System

In April 2002 Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman signed an updated commendation for the team of six people who implemented the nation's first 911 system in Haleyville in 1968.

The commendation reads:

WHEREAS, 9-1-1 emergency telephone systems have helped save lives and property in the state of Alabama and our nation; and

WHEREAS, the first 9-1-1 call was made in Haleyville, Alabama on February 16, 1968, and was the result of the hard work and dedication of six Alabamians; and

WHEREAS, R.W. "Bob" Gallagher, president of Alabama Telephone in 1968, had the concept to install the first 9-1-1 system and went to State Central Office Manager, Robert E. "Bob" Fitzgerald to make it happen; and

WHEREAS, after Mr. Fitzgerald wrote the required engineering procedures, he and his four technicians, Jimmy White, Glenn Johnston, Pete Gosa and Al Bush, installed the first 9-1-1 system; and

WHEREAS, these men are to be commended for their remarkable work in providing this crucial service to the public;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Don Siegelman, Governor of the State of Alabama, do hereby commend
