With the prospect of a national public safety wireless network becoming more real, the first list of potential software applications has been created, in this case for the emergency medical services. The National Public Safety Telecommunications Council (NPSTC) generated the list at the request of the FirstNet board as part of its outreach to eventual users of the network. The applications are ranked from high to low-priority, and include both simple connections to existing hardware, but also more complex links to systems or hardware that doesn’t exist yet. At the top of the priority list are software interfaces to EMS patient care equipment, speech-to-text for patient records, video-assisted patient care, vehicle location, and incident command. More advanced applications on the wish-list include HAZMAT placard decoding, blood or breath analysis, fleet management, speech translation, and citizen AED locating. NPSTC is also preparing similar applications lists for law enforcement and fire/rescue agencies, and will submit them to FirstNet for action. Download (pdf) the complete EMS list here.
