The communications marketplace has leap-frogged the Federal Communications Communications’ (FCC) attempt to get in front of the 911 text-messaging issue, with the announcement of a satellite communicator and smartphone app that allows a user to send e-mail, SMS test messages and Twitter updates from anywhere on earth. The device is marketed by SPOT, which has been selling an emergency locator device that can send pre-configured emergency messages for help. The company’s newest product uses an iPhone or other smartphone to connect to the SPOT Connect device via Bluetooth, and send short-format messages over a satellite connection. The device can also send an “SOS” help message to a subscription emergency call center, who will notify emergency agencies. The FCC has proposed creating a future 911 network that would accept text messages to report emergencies. It’s not not clear how SPOT messages could be routed to the appropriate comm center or help dispatched to the proper agency for handling.
