A nighttime fire destroyed the home of a husband and wife who were long-time members of the Washington State Patrol, killing them both and a rookie state police trooper who was temporarily residing with the couple. Anne Miller-Hewitt, director of the WSP’s Wenatchee communications center and its 15 dispatchers, died in the fire, along with her husband Gary Miller, a WSP lieutenant. Trooper Kristopher Sperry, 30, also died. He graduated from the WSP academy in June and was living with the couple while his own home was under construction. Officials said one of the occupants dialed 911 at 1:38 a.m. to report the fire, and a dispatcher instructed them to leave. The home is in a very rural area with no close-by neighbors. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire, and said they have no reason to believe it wasn’t accidental. Miller-Hewitt joined the WSP in 1987 and was promoted to Communications Officer IV in 2007. Her husband Gary joined the WSP in 1989.
The Washington State Patrol released these photos of (l. to r.) Comm. Off. IV Miller-Hewitt., Lt. Miller and Trooper Sperry. Notes or cards of condolence can be sent to:
