A San Diego County (Calif.) sheriff’s dispatcher survived a horrific roll-over accident in a patrol vehicle, but the deputy driving was killed as the two attempted to stop a wrong-way driver on a state highway. Dep. Ken Collier, 39, was thrown from his SUV after it hit a concrete abutment. He was airlifted to a hospital but died later at the hospital. Dispatcher Ryan Debellis escaped the vehicle before it caught fire and burned. He was hospitalized overnight and was expected to survive. Sheriff’s officials say the two apparently spotted a person driving the wrong way on Hwy. 52 in Santee, and tried to parallel the car to alert the driver. However, the auxiliary lane they were using ended, the vehicle struck the abutment, and the SUV rolled down a hill into a ravine. The wrong-way driver was stopped several miles up the road, still going the wrong way. The driver was arrested for DUI and may face manslaughter charges in Collier’s death.
