The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued an Order that updates its previous rules on handling emergency calls made through a relay service, usually used by the hearing impaired. The update takes into account relay calls made by a video or Internet connection, technology that is much more flexible and effective that a typical TTY device. Specifically, the rules focus on how such relay calls are identified when they arrive at the PSAP, and how callbacks from a dispatcher are handled at the relay service office.
