Sheriff Admits Mistake, Won’t Say Why

After a Town of Alfred (NY) official complained about a delayed response to a property damage accident, Allegany County sheriff William Tompkins admitted that it was caused by a dispatcher error. But Tompkins was secretive about any details of the incident, only admitting, “A dispatcher made an error.” He said the dispatcher was relatively new, had received counseling, and that “appropriate disciplinary measures” had been taken. Tompkins said there were “extenuating circumstances” that mitigated the dispatcher’s mistake, but that those circumstances were not appropriate for public disclosure.
