Several law enforcement agencies across the country are turning to the Twitter messaging Internet application to transmit information about critical incidents to citizens, according to a CNN on-line article. Twitter is a membership Web site that allows users to create 140-character messages, which are then received by “followers” of that person. Some celebrities have thousands of followers, while most Twitter users have just a few. But public safety officials say Twitter is useful to alert citizens of hazardous locations, accidents, and missing or wanted persons.
