The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is ramping up to funnel $4 billion in grants to state and local agencies, and has now posted information on Web to guide applicants for the money. The funding is part of a $787 billion economic stimulus package recently passed by Congress and signed by President Obama. None of that money is specifically marked for public safety communications, radio systems or dispatching, which will force comm centers across the country to compete with other law enforcement programs for a portion of the funding. According to the BJS, money will available from competitive and non-competitive grants, both directly from BJS and through state-level administrative agencies. Find full information here, and carefully check the requirements for applications and matching funding.
