Chief Yanks Illegal Radios From Officers’ Cars

The take-home patrol car program used by the Indianapolis (Ind.) Metro Police Department is intended to make officers more visible on the region’s streets, but it has also generated one side-effect: several hundred officers installed Amateur band, two-way radios in their cars, and frequently used them to make profane and inappropriate remarks to other officers. Now, after a local Amateur radio operator complained to the FCC and talked to a local TV station, the police chief ordered an audit of all patrol vehicles and the removal of all the radios, which the officers were unlicensed to use. The chief did not say that any officer would be disciplined for violating federal radio licensing regulations. From a press account, the radios were installed into the patrol car’s radio console set-up, and appear to operate in the 2-meter (144 MHz) band. Watch the TV report here.
