It could cost up to $60 million to replace the city of Cleveland’s public safety radio system, but obsolete gear and several system crashes have forced officials to make the tough decision despite the lack of funding to pay for an upgrade. The current Motorola system was turned on in 1997 and serves several city agencies. But now Motorola doesn’t support the system, forcing the city to scavenge for used spare parts to keep its 6,000 radios operating.
