San Francisco-area radio consultant Daryl Jones has posted a spreadsheet that allows municipal radio users in that area to compare the costs of operating the own radio system, or participating in a regional system. By simply filling in several figures about your current system into the Excel spreadsheet, his formulas will calculate the cost results for analog conventional, P25 digital conventional and participation in a P25 digital trunked system. Jones claims, “Participation in a regional P25 digital trunked radio system by a small to medium size city may cost at least 700% more than traditional analog voted repeater systems for equivalent coverage.” Read his funding advice and download the spreadsheet here.
