Cellular Company’s Privacy Policy Questioned

An AT&T Wireless privacy policy nearly led to a Genesee County (Mich.) man’s death when he passed out from carbon monoxide, according to the county’s 911 director. Stephen Todd wrote the company and the county’s 911 committee about the incident, saying a dispatcher was able to trace the man’s Verizon cellular phone number to his home, but that it took AT&T two hours to fax back his subscriber information. Todd asked AT&T to reconsider how it handles emergency subscriber requests. An AT&T spokesperson said a dispatcher didn’t fax the necessary paperwork to the company until after the man was found.
