A new survey by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has found that 31% of U.S. households now rely only on their cellular phones to receive telephone calls, and not wired telephones. The results have broad implications for comm centers that handle 911 calls, which may not report the caller’s precise location. The survey of over 16,000 persons in the first half of 2008 showed a substantial increase from 2005. Most cellular-only users were renters, along with unrelated adults that include roommates and unmarried couples. About 25% of low-income respondents reported using only cellular phones, while 34% of renters said they use only cellular service.
