The European Union (EU) announced that the 112 emergency telephone number is now universally available in all 27 participating countries. The EU announced that its legal action against Bulgaria–the last country without 112 service–had been successful in convincing the country to move forward with implementation. Bulgaria now has the service, the EU announced. Most countries continue to have their original 3-digit emergency numbers, such as 999 in the UK, but also allow 112 calls for police, fire or EMS. Visit the EU’s 112 Web site, which includes an interesting holiday card download.
