Questions Raised Over EMS Chopper Crash

The Maryland State Police have released logging tapes of dispatch radio transmissions made the day an EMS helicopter crashed, killing the crew, and it includes a dispatcher saying the chopper was dispatched because an ambulance crew didn’t want to drive to the hospital. The helicopter encountered bad weather enroute from a vehicle accident scene to the hospital, and tried to divert to an Air Force airport, but crashed short of the runway. On the tape, a dispatcher told the chopper pilot he was being sent to Charles County. “Where else?,” the dispatcher radioed. “These guys never want to drive to the hospital.” An investigation earlier this year revealed that nearly half of the helicopter medical transports may be unnecessary, creating increased risk for medivac crews.
