A Maryland state police helicopter carrying a crew of three and two patients crashed in a Maryland park east of Washington (DC) last Monday as it tried to land at an Air Force base in bad weather, and now the crash investigation will include why emergency notifications and the response was delayed for almost 45 minutes. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the crash occurred at 11:58 p.m., but the Prince George’s County 911 center wasn’t notified until 12:41 a.m. The helicopter was located just after 2:00 a.m. in the park, and there was just one survivor. Officials said the chopper was located with the help of a cellular phone belonging to a crew member, apparently by using a “ping” from the handset, traced to the nearest antenna tower. It’s the 8th medivac crash in 12 months, and the NTSB has expressed concern with the rate of crashes.
