A 24 year-old man who fell over a 60-foot cliff in a rural Clackamas County (Ore.) south of Portland, and it was so quick that his backpack was left behind at the top. But fortunately he still had his cellular phone, and dialed 911 after he regained consciousness, reaching the county 911 center. An ACD answered the call and told the man if he had an emergency, “Say ‘Help.'” On the logging tape of the call, the man was barely able to say one unintelligible word, but was forwarded to a dispatcher. He is then on a series of phone calls as emergency units were enroute. He couldn’t clearly describe his location, but eventually heard a fire unit’s back-up alarm, and firefighters spotted him down the cliff. He was pulled out by a cliff rescue crew and airlifted to a hospital. Read more here, and listen to at least two of the 911 calls here, and ponder how calls or communications with the man were handled.
