Press Debates Radio Encryption Policy

The issues of public safety communications are universal–journalists in New South Wales (Australia) are upset that police have encrypted their radio system, and won’t allow the media to obtain or purchase compatible radios so they can continue to monitor law enforcement activities. An editorial notes that in the U.S. some police have arranged for media to have radios, and that even New York City’s police and fire radio systems are not encrypted.
