911 Call Didn’t Bring Police

Oceanside (Calif.) police officials admit that a veteran dispatcher did not follow procedures when she failed to call back the person who dialed 911 from a home in June, and sent no officers to investigate. The homeowner, 24 year-old Betty Orozco was found murdered when they responded to a second 911 call made 20 minutes later. The case is eerily similar to the murder of Brittany Zimmermann in Dane County (Wisc.) in early April, where a 911 from her apartment didn’t generate a police response. Oceanside police say the involved dispatcher is a 21-year veteran and had no explanation for why she didn’t call back the number after receiving the hang-up 911 call. Any discipline is pending, police officials say. Read more about the timing of the calls and the incident here.
