Just one month after passage of legislation on VoIP/E911, the FCC has taken steps to comply with the new law, which essentially makes Internet-related communications providers an equal partner in the nation’s E911 systems, along with wired and cellular telephone providers. President Bush signed the New and Emerging Technologies 911 Improvement Acct on July 23rd, setting an Oct. 21st deadline for the FCC to impose regulations to insure VoIP callers can quickly and directly reach a PSAP when they dial 911. The law sets out mainly legal and administrative requirements, and doesn’t tackle any of the technical issues that still plague wireless and VoIP communications, including accurately pinpointing the location of the caller.
