The director of the WHITCOM (Whitman County, Wash.) Communications Center was struck and seriously injured by a suspected DUI driver Sunday night as she crossed a downtown Kansas City (Mo.) street. Patti VonBargen was attending the annual APCO conference and was enroute back to her hotel from dinner with two employes of InterAct Public Safety Systems. According to witnesses, the vehicle brushed one of the InterAct employees, but struck VonBargen with full force, dragging her up to 100 feet. VonBargen suffered serious leg and arm injuries, and was taken to a hospital where she underwent surgery on Monday. The driver of the vehicle feld, but police later arrested the driver and charged him with DUI and hit-and-run. As of Wednesday, VonBargen remains in ICU, and her two children have flown in to be with her. The 911 CARES program is monitoring this situation and will post updates.
