Chief Defends Officers–At Correct Door

Inglewood (S. Calif.) police chief Jacqueline Seabrooks held a press conference to defend officers who approached the door of an apartment, and then fatally shot the resident who came to the door with a handgun. Seabrooks explained that a 911 caller reported a disturbance in a car in front of the apartment building, and that the involved male had gone into apartment #10, where the officers knocked. The chief released a printed transcript of the 911 call and radio traffic confirming her claims. The victim’s family has filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming officers acted improperly, but they didn’t explain why the victim answered the door holding a gun. Read more about the controversy here, and download (pdf) the transcript here (note that the transcript oddly redacts the name of the Communications Manager, which the city’s telephone directory lists at Teresa Jelks-Kirkley).
