A dispute between the federal government and satellite communications provider SES Americom has generated controversy over whether it really affects public safety on the Navajo Nation reservations. The satellite service provides voice and data connections, and television video services to several remote Navajo chapters across the country. Earlier this year SES warned the Navajo Nation that it would cut off service because the federal government had not paid the company some $6 million, but Navajo officials said it wouldn’t affect public safety operations because they have other links to NCIC and other services. But now a Navajo Nation official has sent letters to the FCC and President Bush claiming any shut-down would jeopardize public safety operations, as well as cut off libraries and other facilities.
