Teams of firefighters and Motorola radio technicians are testing a new $22 million radio upgrade intended to improve communications throughout the city of Chicago (Ill.). The city hopes to put 2,100 portable radios into service that use digital technology, but no cut-over date has been set. Much of the work involved improving most of the 24 antenna sites, including tearing down some 50 year-old installations, rebuilding others and installing air-conditioning at others. One fire official calls it the biggest upgrade to the radio system in 25 years. The upgrade was sparked by a 2003 high-rise fire that killed six persons.
