The odor of smoke and an alarm sounding caused Highlands County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office dispatchers to evacuate their second-story comm center last week during a severe storm. Officials said the dispatchers moved to the county’s EOC where back-up gear allowed them to continue handling incidents and radio traffic. Technicians searched the building and examined all the equipment, but could not find any fires, visible smoke or other problems. After about 90 minutes the dispatchers returned to the comm center to continue normal operations.
