Calif. 911 Abuse Penalties Increased

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed legislation that will increase the penalty for dialing 911 for other than emergencies by next Jan. 1st. Under current law making such calls is an infraction, and callers receive a written warning on the first and second calls. Fines then kick in for subsequent calls at $50, $100 and $200, but are dependent upon the violators ability to pay. Under the new law, a written warning is issued for the first violation, but then fines of $50, $100 and $250 kick in for subsequent violations. Qualifying calls are “other than because of an emergency”–they don’t have to be abusive or false. Download (pdf) the new law here.
