Oklahoma City (Okla.) says that it spent just $5 million to build a wireless network for city workers that includes advanced applications for police officers and firefighters. The Wi-Fi system was installed by Tropos Networks Inc., and uses 1,200 fixed locations and 850 mobile repeaters to cover 622 square-miles, providing access to 150 different applications. There is no public access to the system, and several layers of security to protect mobile data for public safety agencies. Future applications will include surveillance video direct to police vehicles, fire scene video to HQ, weather station connections and several graphic/map applications.
