Sheriff Switches Off Eavesdroppers on Radio

One Lake County (Tenn.) law enforcement official estimated that 90 percent of the county’s residents have been monitoring the sheriff’s old analog radio channels, but not any more–the sheriff turned on a $120,000 digital network that will render the old scanners useless. Ridgely Police Asst. chief Kenny Lee told a reporter, “It got so we would be going to someone’s house for an arrest or to question and that person would know that we were coming before we got there.” He said that at a recent accident scene, there were no ambulance chasers or crowd to control, just public safety units. The county is keeping the radio system’s frequency “highly secret,” a newspaper article states, so the system “seems very secure.” Read more about the new system here.
