Chief Shot, Calls for Help on Radio

When Capac (Mich., pop. 1,775) police chief Raymond Hawks pulled over an erratic driver, the man ran into his house and wouldn’t come out. After St. Clair County sheriff’s deputy arrived, the two began to tow the car, prompting the suspect to open fire with a rifle from inside the home. Hawks was seriously wounded and deputy Tim O’Boyle was grazed. Hawks radioed a county dispatcher for help, “I am dying, I am dying.” Several neighbors dialed 911 to report the shooting, too. Reinforcements soon arrived, but the suspect had fled to a nearby property and was arrested several hours later. Read the full story and listen to the telephone and radio traffic here, including a dramatic 911 call from the chief to dispatcher Dave Ponke.
