The London (UK) Metropolitan Police will test a personal locating system for officers this fall, using the agency’s existing Airwave personal handsets to obtain the GPS-based locations. The Met has 33,500 officers, and officials say the system would cost $4.3 million if the location technology is rolled out to all officers. The Airwave radios have always had the capability to provide location, but it’s not been turned on. Patrol vehicles already have the ability to transmit their location when the radio transmits.
