On Wednesday the FCC released an Order that sets out technical standards for creating a voluntary nationwide alerting system using commercial mobile communications system, including cellular phones. The FCC said the order was, “a significant step towards implementing one of our highest priorities–to ensure that all Americans have the capability to receive timely and accurate alerts, warnings and critical information.” The alerts would include presidential messages, AMBER alerts, natural disasters, all based on a techno-neutral model designed for any device and any person (blind, deaf, etc.).
