The Stafford County (Virg.) comm center is brand-new, with all the latest technology and plenty of room. On the other hand, they’re operating at one-half the recommended level of personnel, and haven’t hired anyone new since 2004. The dispatchers work 12-hour shifts, usually eat meals at their desks, but do get two 15-minute breaks during their shift. The sheriff has asked for 12 new positions, but the county supervisors have turned down the repeated requests, along with requests from other county departments.
