The city of Philadelphia (Penn.) has turned on a text-messaging alerting system for its citizens who sign up to receive emergency messages. Users can limit messages to a geographic area or the entire region, and receive alerts on weather, HAZMAT incidents, missing persons or other situations. A $900,000 homeland security grant paid for the system, dubbed ReadyNotifyPA. Read about the new system here.
