Even though the FCC’s latest auction didn’t come up with a winning bid for a nationwide public safety network, there already is a nationwide network–existing wireless carriers. Under the federal Networx program, last year the government awarded several wireless carriers a blanket contract to provide voice, data, video and other wireless services. Now the first of the agency-specific contracts has been signed: a $20 million deal with AT&T for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, with 47,000 employees.
