The Michigan Public Service Commission has issued approvals for county 911 surcharges, but almost two-thirds of the counties received less than what they requested. The commission just implemented state-wide surcharge regulations, and required counties to request and justify their future 911 surcharges. Fourteen counties didn’t apply, since they fund 911 other ways. But of 68 counties applying, 46 learned on Tuesday their approved surcharges were less than they requested. The requests ranged from $5.37 a month to just 18 cents, and the approvals ranged from $2.18 to 18 cents. There were 21 counties that received exactly what they asked for. Calhoun County requested 66 cents to help fund a consolidation, but only 33 cents was approved. Otsego County asked for $1.72 and received all of it. Oscoda County asked for 46 cents…but received only 45 cents. Download (pdf) the entire surcharge list here.
