Industry Group Issues 911 Recommendations

A public safety industry group has issued a 96-page report that recommends aligning 911 services to customer expectations, dedicating 911 funds to their actual purpose, and greater state involvement in implementing and managing 911 systems. The 14-member 9-1-1 Industry Alliance commissioned the study by ColoComm Group, a consulting firm composed of University of Colorado faculty, including former FCC engineering chief Dale Hatfield. The company’s final report includes a review of 911 history, its original technology and the systems’ limitations. It also evaluates the various governance models of 911 systems, and how they are funded. Not surprisingly, the report’s conclusions and recommendations coincide with efforts by other companies to generate revenue from future upgrades to the nation’s 911 systems.
