Encrypted Radio & Drug Conviction

Two separate news stories have an ironic connection: Orlando (Fla.) announced it will switch to encrypted radio channels for its police radio system, blocking out scannerists and the media from monitoring their radio channel. Police officials said that criminals are listening to the radio channels, and the police want to keep their tactics and responses confidential. And in Boston, a federal judge has sentenced a former Boston PD officer to 18 years in prison for his role in a cocaine sales operation. Court testimony said Nelson Carrasquillo provided protection for drug shipments, including monitoring BPD radio communications.
