Director Retires, Dispatchers Disciplined

The director of the Bucks County (Penn.) 911 center has retired in the aftermath of a mishandled incident, and nine dispatchers have been suspended without pay, county officials say. Brent Wiggins, a 35-year county employee, had been talking about retiring in 2009, but county officials say the incident probably prompted his early departure. On Feb. 13th there were 10 dispatchers were available when a woman confined to a bed dialed 911 to say the bed was on fire. However, the call rang unanswered until an already-busy dispatcher answered it and put it on hold. The call was finally handled, but the woman died before firefighters could rescue her. Six dispatchers were suspended for one day, and three supervisors were suspended from two to five days each. Read more about the latest developments and watch several news videos here.
