A discussion by the Williamson County (Ill.) Board about public safety response times started by pointing a finger at the 911 center, and ended with a look at the way the county’s jurisdiction’s are configured. A citizen’s complaint about a long response time was deflected by 911 coordinator Ken Smith, who explained to the board that the center promptly answers and dispatches fire and EMS units to incidents. However, he added that the center only follows the response plans devised by the agencies themselves, which doesn’t include sending units across jurisdictional boundaries. Those response decisions, he said, were beyond his agency’s authority. Read more about the discussions here.
