A woman who noticed a 6 year-old boy walking alone along a busy expressway in Louisville (Ken.) dialed 911 to report the situation to police, and is not critical of their response. A misunderstanding delayed an officer’s arrival by 25 minutes, police admit. The child had decided to skip his usual bus ride home from school and walk. Police said the wandering child had first been been reported by a passing bus driver. Then when the a woman called 911 to say she had picked up the boy, dispatchers believed it was the mother reporting the child was safe. It wasn’t until the woman dialed 911 again that they realized the woman was a passerby. Oddly, the woman told a reporter, “Who’s to say I couldn’t pick up the child and I could have raped him. I could have did anything to the baby before they got here.” The boy’s mother also expressed frustration with the delayed response, saying, “So far as the system, so far as the police and school, they need to do something about that, they need to get that together.”
