County Pulls Out of State Radio Net

Erie County (NY) officials have voted not to participate in the state’s still unfinished state-wide radio system, after receiving negative feedback from their public safety officials. But state officials say the decision was made too early, based on the first system tests that were intended to find and work out bugs in the technology. But the city’s public safety managers say the state system was only expected to cover 60% of the county, much less than needed. The state system has been controversial, with state official saying it’s on track, and critics saying it will cost up to $13 billion and use M/A-COMM technology that’s unproven. Read more here.
